Organizations are advised to become well informed of the requirements that have to be met in order to obtain and maintain the Better Biomass certificate. These requirements depend on type of activities and the position in the supply chain as well as whether the biomass products fall within or outside the scope of Directive 2009/28/EC (Renewable Energy Directive) or Regeling conformiteitsbeoordeling vaste biomassa voor energietoepassingen (Dutch regulation dealing with conformity assessment of sustainable biomass for energy applications).
Currently, two versions of the Better Biomass certification system exist:
The new version of the Better Biomassa certification system is at the final stage of the reassessment procedure by European Commission to be recognized as voluntary scheme to demonstrate compliance with the sustainability and traceability requirements as laid down in Directive 2009/28/EC. Pending this reassessment procedure, the current recognized system based on NTA 8081:2012-04 linked to NTA 8080:2009 is valid.
The Better Biomass certification system is currently under assessment by the Dutch Advisory Commission on Sustainability of Biomass for Energy Applications as well to be recognized as certification scheme to demonstrate compliance with the requirements as laid down in Regeling conformiteitsbeoordeling vaste biomassa voor energietoepassingen.
