Certification documents

Organizations are advised to become well informed of the requirements that have to be met in order to obtain and maintain the Better Biomass certificate. These requirements depend on type of activities and the position in the supply chain as well as whether the biomass products fall within or outside the scope of Directive 2009/28/EC (Renewable Energy Directive).

Currently, two versions of the Better Biomass certification system exist:

  • Certification non-RED biomass products for biomass products that fall outside the scope of Directive 2009/28/EC (Renewable Energy Directive), i.e. apply to solid and gaseous biomass for energy purposes other than transport and to bio-based products.
  • Certification RED biomass products for biomass products that fall within the scope of Directive 2009/28/EC (Renewable Energy Directive), i.e. apply to biomass products that are intended for biofuels (fuel for transport) or bioliquids (liquid fuel for other energy purposes).

The new version of the Better Biomassa certification system is currently under reassessment by European Commission to be recognized as voluntary scheme to demonstrate compliance with the sustainability requirements as laid down in Directive 2009/28/EC. Pending this reassessment procedure, the current recognized system based on NTA 8081:2012-04 linked to NTA 8080:2009 is valid.
